Iron Man's "Better Than Randy's Donuts"

This week we will be doing a recipe based off of Iron Man 2. Tony Stark is once again in the house as we create a recipe to go with the movie. In Iron Man 2 Tony is facing the pressure of openly being Iron Man. With the government wanting to get ahold of his technology he is faced with new villains, and a new ally, Marvel's very own 'Black Widow,' Natasha Romanoff. Iron Man 2 is filled will classic Marvel banter, thrilling fight scenes and Tony Stark's charming self, all accompanied by the classic sounds of AC/DC.

This movie features some of my favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe moments, including Natasha kicking Happy Hogan's butt in boxing and Tony jumping out of a plane as a means of arrival for the Stark Expo. But, out of the whole film one of my absolute favorite clips from is Tony eating a donut on top of Randy's Donuts. In case you are a bit rusty on your Iron Man memory check out a clip of it below:

I feel like it is a perfect representation Tony, no cares in the world, sitting on a giant donut whilst enjoying a box of donuts himself. So in dedication to one of my favorite Tony Stark moments, this week we will be making homemade cake donuts. These arc reactor donuts are a great way to honor Iron Man while also remembering Tony's nonchalant attitude while facing down Nick Fury while on top of a donut. So, without further ado let's get into the recipe. These donuts are delicious, easy to make, and totally have the Marvel spirit. I love these homemade donuts, which are a modern twist on a typical Old-Fashioned donut.

"Better then Randy's Donuts":

Ingredients:

1/4 cup of butter

1/4 cup of vegetable oil

1/2 cup of granulated sugar

1/3 cup brown sugar

2 large eggs

1 1/2 tsp of baking powder

1/4 tsp of baking soda

1/2 tsp of nutmeg (or to taste)

1/2 tsp of cinnamon (or to taste)

1 tsp of vanilla extract

1 vanilla bean split down the middle long ways, beans scrapped into a bowl

2 2/3 cups of all purpose flour

1 cup of milk

Glaze ingredients:

1 cup of semisweet chocolate chips

4 tbsp of butter

2 tbsp & 2 tsp of light corn syrup

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Blue sprinkles

Instructions:

For the donuts

1. Preheat the oven to 425°F. And prepare the donut tray by lightly greasing it with butter or Pam.

2. Next, in a medium-sized mixing bowl, mix the butter (melted cooled to room temperature), vegetable oil, and sugars until the mix is completely smooth. Once your mix is at the right consistency add the eggs to mix beating them in. Again, your final mixture should be smooth and even.

3. Follow by adding the baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, salt, cinnamon, vanilla extract and vanilla beans.

4. Add flour and milk into the mixture, alternating between the milk and flour. Make sure everything is thoroughly combined. The batter should be fairly thick, the spatula should drag while you stir it.

5. Put the batter into your pre-greased doughnut pans, filling the wells. Be sure to leave about 1/4 inch from the top of the donut wells to allow the donuts space to grow once they are in the oven.

6. Bake the doughnuts for about 10 minutes. If you are unsure if the donuts are ready simply use a toothpick to check. Stick the toothpick into the center of donut, if the toothpick comes out clean they're ready. If it is still a bit wet, let the donuts continue to bake under a close eye. Remove them from the oven, and wait 5 to 7 minutes until moving them to a cooling rack.

For the glaze

1. Melt all of the ingredients together in a small to medium saucepan over low heat, stirring frequently and consistently. If you would rather use a microwave, the glaze can be melted by heating all the ingredients in a medium microwavable bowl in 30 second increments. Make sure you are stirring between each microwave to assure a smooth glaze.

2. You can apply the glaze the donuts in various ways. I found it to be easiest and most efficient to dip the top of the donut into the glaze mixture bowl, allowing it to go about 1/4 of the way down the edges of the donuts.

3. While the glaze is still drying onto the donut take your silver edible paint and coat a light layer over your glaze. Then apply blue sprinkles in the pattern of Tony's arc reactor. To do so start on the edge of the donut and apply in squares leaving a space between each empty.

Disclaimer: While delicious, these arc reactor donuts sadly do not come with an invitation to join Nick Fury's "super secret boy band."

I had an awesome time with this recipe, and the outcome was delicious. I hope you've enjoyed this weeks post. Stay tuned... next week we have a special holiday post for those who want to add a bit of Marvel into their upcoming holiday plans.

As always,

- Excelsior
